Anyone who rides or drives around on tyres needs to thank good old John Boyd Dunlop, not because he was the inventor of the pneumatic tyre but because he was the gentleman who really exploited the benefits of the pneumatic tyre.  Incidentally the inventor of the pneumatic tyre was a man called Robert William Thomson, born Scotland 1822.
