Check Your Tyres in Time for Summer

As we head into June, the weather does what British weather does best — swings from warm, dry days to sudden downpours and the odd thunderstorm thrown in for good measure. It’s the season of road trips, holiday getaways, and long drives with the windows down. Before you set off, it’s worth giving your tyres a quick once‑over to make sure they’re ready for the months ahead.

At A&M Tyres, Wigan, we’ve been keeping local drivers safe since 1988. A few simple checks now can save you money, improve safety, and help your car handle whatever the summer skies decide to throw at it.

1. Check Your Tyre Pressures

Warm weather increases road temperatures, which can affect tyre pressure. Under‑inflated tyres reduce fuel efficiency and can cause uneven wear; over‑inflated tyres reduce grip — not ideal on hot tarmac or in sudden summer storms.

A quick pressure check takes minutes and makes a big difference. If you’re unsure what your pressures should be, pop in — we’re always happy to help.

2. Inspect Your Tread Depth

Summer driving still demands good tread. Heavy rain and thunderstorms can cause standing water, and worn tyres are far more likely to aquaplane.

The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but we recommend replacing tyres before they get close to that. If your tyres are still in good condition, we’ll always tell you — we never suggest replacing tyres unnecessarily. It’s wasteful, bad for the planet, and not how we do things.

3. Look for Cracks, Bulges or Damage

Hot weather can worsen existing tyre damage. If you spot:

  • Cracks in the sidewall
  • Bulges
  • Embedded objects
  • Uneven wear

…then it’s time to get them checked properly. Many issues can be repaired — and our puncture repair service has kept thousands of customers safely on the road for less.

4. Consider All‑Weather Tyres (If You Need New Ones)

If your tyres are still in great condition, keep them — simple as that. But if you do need replacements this summer, it’s worth thinking about all‑weather tyres.

Why?

Because British weather doesn’t stick to one season. All‑weather tyres are designed to handle:

  • Hot, dry roads
  • Sudden downpours
  • Cooler nights
  • Occasional wintery snaps

They’re often the best all‑rounders for UK driving, offering solid performance without needing to switch between summer and winter sets. And at A&M Tyres, we only sell high‑quality new tyres — premium, value and budget options to suit every driver, we NEVER sell part worn tyres.

5. Check Your Wheel Alignment

Potholes, speed bumps and winter roads can knock your alignment out without you noticing. Poor alignment causes:

  • Faster tyre wear
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Pulling to one side
  • A less comfortable drive

Our digital wheel alignment restores your car to factory settings, helping your tyres last longer and your car drive true.
